I just bought an african cichlid male, sold as a peacock cichlid and the pet store that sold it to me said it was a Aulonocara Davii, otherwise known as a Yellow Side. Has anyone heard of this? They said it was a new strain and wasn't found in any of the books. Perhaps it is a cross between two other Aulonocara or a new Malawi discovery? Perhaps it is someones experiment (or accident) of crossing two different strains? It was the most beautiful blue striped peacock in their tank. I would attach a photo but the fish is a bit stressed since I just got him today and he is rather dark (but eating and seems to be just fine, getting along well with my other electric yellows and electric blues in my 125 gallon tank). I didn't buy the female but the pet store sure wanted to sell her to me. I'm sure the female would have cross bred with my other haps or copadochromis. Was this a good buy or did I just buy a 'mongrel' fish? It cost me over fifty bucks!

nothing came up on the search that i did. i think that if i plunked down fifty bucks for the male, i would get the female, too and raise some fry!

i did come across a reference to a yellow sided flavescent, though.

In the book, "Cichlids: The Pictorial Guide", they list Aulonocara stuartgranti, otherwise known as Aulonocara mbenji, also known as Yellowsided Peacock. This fish look exactly like the one I have! And the female looks like the one they tried to sell me. Not really interested in breeding. I used to breed fish and had over 30 tanks. Now I breed canaries but I'm just about bred out! I will gladly pay top dollar for the colored adult to have a prime show tank!
