is it worth spending 100 bux on a uv sterilizer on a 100 gallon tank?...jsut wondering about everyones opinions on this matter? i'm thinking of getting one, but not sure if they work or oot, or whatever.

No......... not worth it in most cases. The UV's treat the water, not the fish. So, it may help limit the transfer of disease, but it won't cure anything. It is much better to keep your fish healthy from the start and quarantine and new arrivals.

If you are adding wild caught fish on a frequent basis, though, UV's can be of help.

Isn't UV mainly for limiting the growth of single-celled algae in reef tanks (probably not but that's why I don't have a reef tank)?

Yes, that's a big reason....... same in outdoor ponds.

it kills parasites as well.

i'm not gonan sue it as a treatment, but to kill off parasites while they are not on the fish, and to keep the break out from spreading to other fish.

well, i started up a small nano-reef ank about a week ago. and i dont have anything in there yet :)

UV's have to be very well calibrated to do their business well. In many cases, they are not calibrated correctly (water flow), so they're not doing much at all.
