Hi new

Top photo: Nimbochromis fuscotaeniatus, a beautiful (and large when grown) Malawi hap.

Can't make out the bottom photo.

the top and bottom are of the same species

my fish are about 2.5 inches long
how big do they get and how can i tell the difference between a male and female

Males grow to 10 inches (25 cm) or more. During the slow growth process, males will typically begin displaying the characteristic blue (think of a sort of metallic blue, not unlike that of the male S. fryeri) on their heads, which is where the full adult coloring will be concentrated, with the body often a paler shade of blue.
Some may retain the reddish markings you now see on their dorsal and caudal fins, which make for a striking combination in adult specimen.

The females won't stray far from their juvenile colors, turning a slightly deeper brownish hue at maturity.

bottom fish looks like a Copadachromis (bad spelling sorry) variety
