imho, you'll be fine if you change your carbon once a month--that'll take care of any smoke-related chemical nasties that dissolve in the water.

I smoke and have not had any problems, why dont we all smoke?
Tofutti, Tofutti. (small joke, maybe someone will catch it)
Yeah, just replace the carbon from time to time. IMHO

a friend of mine thought he had a cronic water problem for months... come to find out, it was just the smoker's film on the outside of the glass (he hadn't cleaned it in the past year). his fish seemed happy.

All right, no one got my little joke.
If you have the time next time you see Overboard with Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell watch it.
Its pretty good anyway.

OK, I'm thick. I've seen that movie several times, and I should know what your referring to, but I don't.
And I thought I was a small-time movie nut too.

Put a paper towel over the air holes in the filter (if there are any) and change the carbon regularly. Don't put out cigars, cigarettes, etc. right near the tank. Put an inline air filter in the tubing if you use airstones.
I smoked and my father smoked for years and did this. Our fish never suffered any adverse effects. Of course now that it has been years that we don't smoke, my fish have problems. Go figure!
(Of course you do know that second-hand smoke affects cats, dogs, birds, etc. adversely, right?) Not preaching...just asking.

So putting out cigarettes by dunking them in the tank is okay?
Just kidding. I have 8 tanks and smoke 2 packs a day, never saw a problem even with the Anabantoids.

Yes Merlyn I know(Matt hanging head low). I do have birds and I know the issues. I try to use a fan which blows my smoke out the windows whenever possible, but you you are very right in saying so.
Hope all is well,
Matt:)

fortunately, fish don't have lungs so you do not have to worry about lung cancer-

Tell that to the kids with asthma due to mommy and/or daddy smoking "Honey, your asthma would be MUCH worse if you smoked the ciggys yourself!! Now, QUIT yer WHEEZING!"
Smoking affects your fish, pets, kids...everybody it touches.
(I'm not preaching as a non-smoker...I'm an EX-smoker)
Here's a piece of nicorette....:)

There is an increasing body of evidence demonstrating that second-hand cigarette smoke is indeed harmful. One of the most revealing studies is of a small town in Idaho ( I forget the name of the town) where smoking was banned in public places. The town is somewhat isolated and has only one hospital, so everyone in town with an acute health problem goes to that hospital. The hospital noticed an almost SIXTY percent drop in acute myocardial infarction (heart attack) admissions. The opponents of the smoking ban prevailed in appeals court and as soon as smoking resumed in public
when the ban was overturned, the heart attack rate WENT BACK UP again. I can cite many other scientific papers about the dangers of second hand smoke.-
now to get off my soapbox and change the water in my tank
