americans vs. africans

What up? My cousin and a couple of my friends saw my tank and went to the pet store to buy their own. The dude at the store told them that the hot item right now are african cichlids because you can have alot of them is a 55g tank. So now my cousin is saying his 25 two inch africans are stronger and more aggressive than my six inch jag, six inch carpinte, and six inch lukanani. Is this true will his demasoni pick on my fish. I know the water chemistry enables them to ever be in the same tank but are african cichlids tougher than americans. And if they are so territorial, why can they have 40 fish in a 55g tank and i can only have about three in my 75g set up? Whats the deal

I think your cousin and his friends should find another fish store. I can't stand fish stores like that.

25-40 africans in his 55 regardless of the species is a bad idea.

As for aggressiveness. If they should cohabitate then who care who is more aggressive? Stick with your americans sound like you have a good tank.:)

Think about it like this, how long would those little fish last with a full grown red devil or midas.

Yeah, i had to take my red devil out and stick him in my friends tank with hugh oscars and pacu's because he chased my jag carpinte, and lukanani around like little girls. Even though my jag was tiny at the time. that red devil had a vendetta against anything. It could'nt even stand my pleco in his presence. My cousin thinks these 40 fish are'nt going to grow.

off the top of my head the only african that would give teh jag a hard time is a Tilipia Buttikoferi.

The meanest fish I have ever dealt with: Red Devils. So mean when you would walk by them they would attack us through the glas. And that was just walking buy them.

Also let us not forget the Wolf. Known to scare even Pirahnas
