I got up this morning and she was holding!!
I am so excited.
She may eat this first batch, but at least I've got them started.
Now, I'll let some more bananas do the happy dance for me . . .

I'm not sure my LFS will take any possible fry; if we lived close enough, I'd be happy to give some to you because I know you'd take care of them.

How long should I leave her be before I separate her? The last thing I want is to startle her into eating her eggs and/or fry especially since this is her first batch. Of course, she may eat them for me and save me the trouble . . .

i don't have any experience with tang mouthbrooding, but if they're anything like malawians and vics, she will hold for 3 to 4 weeks. i would take her out after 2 weeks.

Congrats on the mouthfull! I want some. Like S.Gypsy I don't know tang mouthbrooders.
The malawis I have, some will only hold three days in the community others will hold full term in the community.

I'll have to learn how to ship; it's something I've been planning on doing. Anyone have any tips?
I'm not really interested in trying to make money; I'd rather they go to good homes. So, yeah, I'd give them away. Don't tell my husband I just said that. ;)

I haven't shipped myself, I know whats needed but haven't done it. Maybe we can work out a trade in the future, I'll ask the lfs on shipping.

you could also join a local fish club and auction them off at club meetings. if you like, you can simply donate them to the club to help them raise funds--just an idea.

I'd like to join the local fish club, but right now, my other activities keep me from being able to attend meetings. I've been hoping that things are going to change shortly so that I can take a more active role, but as it stands I'd feel guilty about not being able to regularly attend the meetings. It's bad timing all around.

That's what I do with my extras. I sold some F1 Neo. multifasciatus for less than a dollar a pop last meeting. I donated the funds to the club. We ended up using some of the money to rent a meeting hall for the next few months.
Of course the really good part of joing a club is meeting all the other fishnuts in person.

I thought the same thing about joining at first. I'm real busy with work, my wife, church and I've got two boys involved in sports, but I found it was easier to attend than I thought. We only meet once a month and we actually try to arrange the meetings in a way that will draw the most members attendance. We do have some members that can only attend an occasional meeting, but we still get to talk to them on our club's forum.
We're planning a club trip to Texas in June for the Texas Cichlid Association's annual show and auction. We're also working on putting together a native fish collecting trip in Oklahoma.

Well, Thursdays are the only days that my husband and I can get together with our friends from college. Two have retail schedules, we have standard work schedules, and the last one works nights. Hopefully, some will be going back to school and my job will be changing so that Thursdays aren't the only day we can all get together.

S.Gypsy and Jonah thats a great idea, but the auctions are usually only twice a year :(

Well, I've still got a long way to go before I have to think about getting rid of any fry. She's only been holding since Saturday! I'm still expecting to come home and find her begging for her afternoon salad because it goes so well with caviar.

I'm jealous, ours are only twice a year, I bet you never have to go to the lfs?

ahhhh...but one never knows what interesting tidbits might be found at the lfs...

And the very best interesting tidbits are the kind where the employess have no clue what they have. Not only do you get to rescue the fish, but you can usually get a bargain too.
Case in point, there was a guy who rescued some Bolivian red rams from a local Wal-Mart that were being sold cheap.

Good point S.gypsy and A.harris, years ago I bought a zebra pleco for the price of a regular pleco from a really green employee.
I don't think I would do that again, but it was a great score.
