I just got fed up with my UGF in the malawi tank and ripped out the plates and filters.
Keep in mind I have alot of filtration.
2 weeks and running and things seem cleaner infact...

Yea. I'm about to do the same and replace th substrate with sand.
Will most likely do it Tuesday. Not looking forward to it. Looking forward to the new look though.

I am pretty pleased with out the UGF, the tank seems to stay cleaner.

I did the same thing myself a little over a month ago. I have been using UGF's for so long, removing them was like pulling teeth. I replaced the gravel with sand in all my tanks and added 2 Filstar XP3 canister filters to my 125. I love it! I took my powerheads out, but put them back in for water movement. I just read a good idea in Tropical Fish Hobbyist magazine. Instead of hanging one of those big foam filters on the bottom, just take the thing off the bottom (can't remember what it's called) that keeps fish and large debris from being sucked into your powerhead and stuff a "bio-ball" inside. Not much of a surface for a bio-surface, but if you have enough filtration otherwise it won't matter. Then the powerhead doesn't look so obtrusive hanging in the tank.
Man! Did it take me a while to get to the point or what?
