gold nugget pleco with malawi

Hi

I was at the fish shop and i fancied buying a gold nugget pleco (£30 for a 2-3 incher!!!:eek: ). Anyway, i was talking to the shop guy and he told me they come from a soft + acidic water environment. But he told me there is a chance it could adapt.

Has anyone managed to keep these together because i dont want to waste 30 quid and make a poor fish suffer.

Hello DG...... i work at the lfs and the manager told me that they will adapt but the high ph might eat away there fins. They are very pretty and i have thought about getting one myself. Also ask your local fish shop if they carry goldie plecos. Almost the same but when they get 4-5 inches long there fins turn a bright red. Very pretty fish.

What is the price range you are talking about for that fish?

In New York, I've always seen them go for approx. $30, and that's what I paid for mine.

I would check the ph of the water at the lfs. here where I live it comes out of the tap at 8 or thereabouts and all our lfs's have gold nuggets for sale, I doubt the lfs treats the water to make it acidic. funny 30 quid is about 60 bucks and my lfs wants 60bucks for the gold nugget, at least their consistent

Plecos will do fine in hard, alkaline water. It just takes some time.
