View Full Version : ID please
This one died out of ten of them. The live specimens have more pearl colors in their body. They don't eat food from surface or mid level but actively sift the sand/sibstrate.The colony differs in size...from appr. 13-16 cm in length. They were labelled as threadin acara but I'm thinking possible misID.Price was right..$7 CDN each...

im thinking Geophagus Jurapari due to the horizontal stripes. Theres another geo. species that looks like that one only it has vertical stripes. Correct me if im wrong anybody but i do bleieve that that is a geo. Jurapari. body shape is right as well.

Not even close.
That type of geo can be pretty hard to ID (jurupari is a satanoperca and has speckles) There' a group of geos like abalios, altifrons, and surinamensis that all kind of look the same, and that is what yours looks like.
Altifrons would be my best guess.

Thanks for the link.Mine are near identical in coloring to that of the altifrons in the picture but have the longer pec, dorsal and anal fins along with a lyre tail like the abalios. The pics I posted are of a dead one that was badly tore up from shipping and isn't quite as nice as the live specimens in the tank,I'm going to get a picture of the colony and post it when I get a chance.....hmmm....Any more guesses??

the only reason i didnt say surinamensis is because it doesnt have the spot on hte side..... maybe just the fish although i think autoxevo's guess seems alittle more accurate. although those in the pictures at ht elink were prob mature. thanks for the correction cfl......
*edit* anohter wooops after taking a second look at the link it seem as though the proximus has the body spot as well and the subject id fish doesnt. lol
