hi.
no problem about keeping C.L. with many of cichlides unless the ones that are enough big to swallow them. i am keeping them( 2"-3")with T .buttikofferi(4"-5"), L.caereleus(2") , P.zebra(2") , M. auratus(2"-3" )and i didn't watch any noticable problem.
check your water parameters the C.L.s are too sensitive to bad water quality.
and finally the C.L.s ( like many of scaleless fishes and like discuses) are too sensitive to many of drogs .
i could suggest to use half advised doze( even you could don't use drogs in earlier stage ) for them and increase the water's temprature to 32'c for 3-4 days.but you should notice that increasing water's temprature will decrease the dissolved oxygen of water and will incraese the metabolism of your fishes . thus you should do good ( read enough) aeration and feed them with enough amounts of quality food and don't over feed.
good luck.

If he had white spots, I'd say he had ick. Clowns are sensitive to it and get it pretty easy. Was your water temp and quality unstable as these things can cause an outbreak.
