Is he sure it isn't just food? I have had a lot of males look liek that for a couple days after shoving as many pellets in their mouths as possible.

I have had males hold eggs before as well, as I have witnessed this with the Astatotilapia Nubila and the Astatotilapia Latifasciata. So yes it has been known to happen with some species from time to time.
