Wouldnt that mess up the tank? I feed mine cucumber and they love it.

I have heard of people who feed cukes to their plecos, I dont think there is to much nutrition in them though. I use zucchini(cougette) and romaine lettuce. Just think of some alternatives for the guys.

Personally I would just give them spirulina algae flakes...

My attempt at feeding spirulina flake has not been successful; the other fish gobble it up before the lumberous p[leco can get to it.

Try the "tube in the water trick" Matt.

Put a piece of PVC tube (long enough to reach the bottom of the tank) in where the plecos hang out. Do this just before lights out. Then after lights out drop the discs in through the tube. Works like a charm because the fish hate the tube and the plecos are smart enough to know after a few times that it means food is coming.

OR you could just keep up with the zucchini. My two plecos (that were given away) used to love it, and unlike romaine, it does have some vitamin content. My plecos never ate anything but discs and zucchini every once in a while and they were huge!
Check this out...and this was the small guy!

Hi Merlyn,

Big pleco!-I feed him Hikari disks after dark as well a Tetramin mini-disks for the Syns after lights out. I just thought I ran across someone who suggested banana, as I always have some around. I am attempting to diversify his diet a bit, and am looking for something new. He does love the Hikari algae wafers though.
Thanks for the info.

Hope all is well

Matt

Don't think the banana would hurt him, certainly, just a little messy, though.

I'm interested to know if you try it.

Maybe I will try it Thursday night, as I always do a 85% water change and vacuum gravel on Friday night. I'll let you know.

funny story - first time i search the net on what to feed the plecos i came up with zucchini. The second search i had to do was to find out what the hell a zucchini was!!!

I've tried apples and pears but no luck. But i wouldnt try something like oranges or lemons cos they would mess with the ph (but they would definately freshen up the water :))

DG, if I'm not mistaken you would call it a cougette??? Is that right?

Matt

Yeah, thats what it is. Because at first i only saw a picture (no translation into british ie cougette), and it looked like a cucumber, so thats what i put in.

I feed my Bristlenose Plecos zucchini, canned french-cut green beans, blanched spinach leaves and Hikari veggie wafers. So far the favorite is zucchini.

I feed mine what I feed the rest of the tank if any of that.

If you have algea covered rocks there is no point. If it is a newer tank the disks work quite well if the others don't eat it first.
