Hi
Anyone have pics of 2" Electric Blue Haps. I would like to compare them to mine to see if thee are really electric blues considering the many species of haps. There are so many pics of fully grown electric blues showing their vibrant blue colours but I've yet to find a picture of a male who's hasn't coloured up as yet.
Thanks
Tyrone

My Electric blues (or at least that's what the guy that gave them to me said they were) are about 2 inches now.
This picture is one of them when they were younger

i can see about getting new ones up soon, though i still can't tell if they are male or female. I have 3 so hopefuly one will be a male.

I have a Scienochromis Ahli or the elusive electric blue that's about two inches. It's a fish that apparently goes by many names, but I think I have what you're looking for. I'll take a picture tonight and post back with the location.

It's probably Sciaenochromis fryeri (aka electric blue ahli or electric blue hap). True Sciaenochromis ahli aren't imported the last I heard. The males are a beautiful blue with a white stripe up the forehead. My male colored up at a little over 2".

I'm not sure if the links will work, if it doesn't the pictures are in the cichlidgallery.com on the fourth page under Trailer Tank. They are the last two showing, one of them I accidently had the flash on, but it turned out pretty good. Just so you know he normally doesn't look that bright. The other coloration is pretty normal as what we see. Anyway, as of the particular classification I would go by what Jonah said, I don't really know all that much about it. The lfs said Ahli, but if they don't send any ahli's over then I must have the fryeri. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this is the fish you are looking for. Sorry I don't have a female.

The proper name is Sciaenochromis fryeri. S. ahli does exist, but the ones sold in the stores are almost always S. fryeri. The common name is Electric Blue.
There is an Iceberg variation that has the white blaze along the head. I posted you a pic of a male Iceberg above in one of my replies. IME, the icebergs color up sooner than the regular S. fryeri.
Some stores/breeders hormone feed their fish, hence, they tend to be colored up sooner...and even females show male coloration. This, however, does not last and tends to fade overtime. There can also be reprodution problems with hormone fed fish. Overall, not a good thing.
So be suspicious of small colored up africans...
Anyways, hope that helps.

How long does it take for an electric blue to color up when it is not injected. I can see some blue developing in mine, but its only a small amount

Here's my Sciaenochromis fryeri male at about 2-2.5", right after I got him. He was just starting to color up.

You need more females. If you only have one, your male will harass her the whole time which could lead to death. If you have 2 or more, he will chase them all equally which will distribute the aggression.

Thank you very much, so all i need is two to put in with him, because i have two males and one female, but the dominant male is the only one who chases her or should i get three females all together for the two males?

thank you, well i have another electric blue but its younger and starting to color up, but it doesnt chase the female around, its just the dominant electric blue that chases her, does this mean i should have 3 females in the tank
