First Q.
What software are you using?
Tips.
Shoot in raw mode since you are using a dslr.
Do all your post processing, ie color adjustment and lighting, in the raw format.
Then convert to uncompressed tiff and crop to what you want to show. After that try reducing width to 600 pixels and then save as a jpeg with a quility of around 8-9.
That should bring you down to 100kb range and yet retain a decent picture.

ya i know what you mean. i knew this hobby would eat me alive(i guess both aquaria and photography) but the finished item is so enjoyable. yes i will be wanting more.. :) its all to come. by the way what camera you shootin now???
I'm using a Canon 350D. I currently have the kit lens, 1 telephoto lens, and 1 prime lens...
Next on the list is a Macro lens, another lighter telephoto lens and 1 more prime lens. hehehe
good luck on the shooting.
I know what you mean with these two hobbies. My wife's comment on the fish hobby was "this is expensive", now with photo, "this is really getting expensive" hahahhaa
