The 2nd pic is probably a female Pseudotropheus kenyii (Maylandia lombardoi), the 3rd does look like a convict, the 5th is also a probable kenyii (male), the 6th through 8th look like a rusty(can't remember the proper name on that one, look up rusty cichlid with Google) and the 9th is an electric yellow (Labidochromis caeruleus).

No guess on the first one, but if it doesn't have any black in the fins then it's not likely to be an electric yellow.

OK, OK, I'll try a guess on the first one. It might be a lemon cichlid.

thanks for you input bro, i did know that 2 were kenyii as i think i remember that name from fish store. i disagree though that the one that looks like a convict is a convict. i have a convict in another tank and he looks different that the one you saw.
thanks agauin!

I have to agree with jonah it looks like a black convict to me. Is it the only one you have? If not and you have a female watch them and see if she lays eggs. Convicts just lay eggs on a rock or something and guard them where as africans pick them up in their mouth.(which i am sure you already knew that.

As for the rusty one i think he is a Labidochromis Hongi (red top kimpuma) but i could be wrong.

Thanks for posting the pics primetime_3wise
I have one of the rusty coloured ones and don't have a camera so you posted just at the right time :)
This will give me a starting point

Would you mind if I use the picture for my files so that I can put a name to it and keep it as a reference?

first one: not sure, ive seen it at my lfs with a tag, i'll check it out.

second one: female or under aged male kenyia

third one: VC-10

fourth one: same fish, lol

fifth one: male kenyia

sith one: we have those at work, but we call them Rustys as well, i'll ask my supplier for the name.

next fish,(yellow) is an electric yellow

rusty=iodotropheus sprengerae...but i'm not so sure that that's what that fish is...i've never seen a rusty with bars. the fish looks more like some sort of ps. zebra like a red top zebra. imho.

what is the full name of a vc-10?

sure fred, go right ahead and use the pic, i don't mind

Here's one with bars:

But I wasn't that sure about the rusty ID anyway.

one problem though with him being a rusty cichlid/I. Sprengarae is that his face is not rusty in color like it says for the profile in that link you gave. i'll try and get a few more good shots of him.

last one of him, so what is the verdict you guys think? like i said he doesn't have a rusty head, so he probably isn't the I. Sprengarae, but i could be wrong so who knows, lol.

female red-top zebra

The rusty one does he have like an orange mohawk almost. If not i take back what i thought he was.

primetime_3wise
04-07-2003, 12:38 PM
yes, he has an orangish mohawk/fin :) he also has some slight stripes that are barely noticeable that run up and down him like a kenyi. the stripes are very slightly more purple than the rest of his body. so what's the verdict?

thanks to everyone for helping me so far.

ok i am 95% sure that he is a Labidochromis Hongi or "red top kimpuma" after looking at some pics i found on the net that look almost identical to her (yes i think i have a female because the coloration isn't as intense as a male, though possibly it could just be that it hasn't reached full maturity at 2 1/2-3").

ReesaPie

i'm thinking the 1st one is a a red zebra

and i totally agree with all the rest of you on the kenyi's, rusty, yellow lab, and convict

jonhomemade

Since you say he has an orange mohawk i'd say he is a Labidochromis Hongi (red top kimpuma) i have one and from what i can tell from your pics it is the same fish. If you guys are still not sure check out www.cichlidgallery.com and look at boilmakers fish pics. That is where i id mine he has some really good photos.

I think the Labidochromis Hongi ID might be correct
The other night I walked into my room and one of them had turned into the lighter colour like in the picture of the Cichlid galery link ( a couple of posts above)including a lighter dorsal fin and a definite blue colour to the body the bars were also a bit more defined. It has now reverted back to the dark brown/bluish colour with the rusty coloured top. Will have to wait and see but if it is I really like it so did well to get a couple of them.
