first buy an air pump.
and airline tubing. and 2 airstones. and a tee connector for the airline tubing.
Pull the plastic filter baskets out drill a 1/4 inch hole in the top for the airline tubing to feed through, insert the tubing in all the to the bottom and connect a small airstone. you may have to notch the fins inside the baskets to allow the airline tubing to go all the way to the bottom without getting pinched.
fill the baskets with substate insert the baskets into their designated places in the pump connect the airline tubing to the air pump using a tee. and plug up the air pump. what happens is the airstones and pump introduce more air into the emperor 400 through the baskets and substates which in turn breaks down more bacteria and waste. leaving you with healthier water for your' fish and more aeration.
Never replace the substrate in the baskets just rinse it when you do filter changes. they say that this will allow you to eliminate the carbon filtration, I don't know if it actually does that. because I still use the carbon filtration as an added extra. but if you pull out the carbon filters, use filter media or filter sponges to take their place.
but my water stays crystal clear since I started using this.
also it doesn't hurt the baskets or pump so if you are not satisfied with the result you can always put your' pump back the way it was. it normally takes a few days to get the natural water filtration built up to see results.
Basically it acts like nature. in the wild water passing over and through stones and substrate with oxygen, filters out harmful bacteria. this is supposed to make the emperor 400 bio wheel the best pump on the market. Man it works great on mine!!!!!!
