How do you go about cleaning the sand? I have black sand it always looks dirty. I try cleaning it by hooking the siphon to the filter, but it tends to suck up more sand then poo.

You'll get the hang of it after a little while. You'll start to just know where to hover the siphon, how far above the sand. I have black sand also, I vac my tank once a week.

I'm guessing you have a Magnum 350 for a filter? Is that what you mean by hookin the siphon up to the filter? If so, I wouldn't really recommend that with the sand substrate. If too much sand gets into your filter, you'll ruin it. Thats why alot of people who have sand put sponges over the intakes of their filters, so no sand gets sucked up in there.

I'll give you the same advice I just gave another person here, get yourself a Python or make your own. Cleaning and water changes couldn't be any easier that way ;)
