I had a huntch he wasn't because I've never seen a RD look like that. Someone told me he might be a gold saum (sp?)

Definately not a gold severum. I'm leaning towards the flowerhorn suggestion.

Really? I payed $7.50 for him. Was that a good deal you think? He's about 3.5''.

I don't know too much about flowerhorns as far as the different grades of them. $7.50 for a 3 1/2" one sounds like a good deal to me though. Wait and see how the colors come out.
What size tank is it in? Any other tank mates? Flowerhorns are quite aggressive and they do get big ;)

Maybe it's a Red Terror? Does anyone else here wanta chime in on this one? I'm sure somebody here knows for sure what it is...

I vote red terror because of the round eyespot. I'm not completely sure if its one of those other guys that look like the red terror.... :) That's why I didn't say anything.

The lfs told me that this gal had already killed 3 RD's in the tank they had been sharing at the time. By the time I bought it it had to be seperated into a solo tank. They were feeding it cichlid pellets and rosy minnows.
I was lookin' at the tank of RD's and didn't see any that looked like this one. They were all regular RD's. But they were all 1'' smaller than this one so that's probably why this one killed the other three I'm guessing.

It looks like a Red Devil to me. Am I missing something?

This is getting confusing. Every person says something different.

Not confusing anymore. The folks that really knew spoke up. I've never had a devil or a terror so I shouldn't have said anything. There actually hard to come by up here & the only juvie rds I've seen already had their bright coloring at 2-3". I forgot about the lateral spots along the body that the festae don't have.
*edit* This is why I stick around the beginners forums.... :)

I learned another new thing! See, this is why this forum is so great. The only RD's I've seen have the orangish color, I've never seen one with the spots on the sides. Same with the fins color.

People are just used to seeing the solid oranges/yellows. That's all that happened there.

I don't think it is a RD. Remember a Red Devil is different from a Midas. If it is a Midas it is showing excelent markings of becoming a barred one and not the colored one.
If it is something else then mabey a Red Terror or mabey a Uropthalmus.
Although in the second pic the head looks like a Amphilophus.
Tough call.
Can we get some more pics?

The term "Red Devil" actually refers to either Amphilophus species (Labiatum or Citrinellum) and I never said which it looked more like. But if I had to guess I would say it is much more like a Labiatum, although undoubtedly of mixed decent.
Regardless of which species it is (or is most like) it could end up being barred, but at 3" or so its still got plenty of time to change (and I'm sure it probably will.) I've had F0 Labiatum and F0 Citrinellum to change at close to 10".
I've only kept a half dozen Uro's, but this fish doesn't resemble one in the least. Festae is even a longer shot
I'd say RD (labiatus) too...... I've got several similar looking juvies from wild parents.

It is 100% red devil!!!! Its definately not a uro, the tail spot is too small and it doesnt really resemble one. Its not a festae it doesnt look much like one at all if you have ever seen one and the bars just behind its gill plate should form a "y" and that fishes body form is different than the festaes since they are more pointed. Flower horn...please no its not flower horn. Just listen to rex carr hes basically a genious! Well at least when its comes to cichlids i couldnt comment on other catagories. Rd im 100% POSITIVE.

Hello,
My vote goes to Red TERROR and not a Devil.

If you look at the link supplied on the second page you can clearly see that is indeed a RD/Midas.
Now on to the next topic!
