I want to get either a pair or a trio (1m, 2f) and wonder from your experience if this is a good idea.

In my Tang tank currently (55g) I have 2 Tropheus moori (1 Pemba "orange flame" and 1 "firecracker"), 1 7-stripe Frontosa,
1 A. compressiceps "orange melwa" (sp?), and 2 Syno. decorus. I will be adding some N. leleupis (about 4 or 6) and some N. brichardi (not sure how many yet).

Could a pair or trio go in with these others? Should I do a pair or should I get a trio?
They will be the only Julis in the tank. (I like them best because of their "checkerboard" pattern. Only reason why them and not another sp.) Also available to me are J. ornatus, dickfeldi, and transcriptus.

The trio will give your male a choice, but once he decides on female (if he decides), the new pair will them proceed to terrorize the outsider.

I think the Julis should be able to handle all the other inhabitants you mention; the question would be if the others could handle them if they pair up. These guys can claim quite a bit of space if they see fit. This will especially be true if the other inhabitants allow themselves to be pushed around or are smaller.

I've kept Juli's with leleupi before. If you have the space to set up clearly defined territories for them, they should do all right.

My male Juli absolutely hates the Syno petricola I keep in the tank with them. I had to set up a separate rockpile for the synos so they could avoid his seek and destroy.

Also marlieri get pretty big. Mine are both right around 4" with teh female being longer and thinner and the male being more massive through the body with a slight hump on his head.

I've not kept the other three Juli species, but I hear they stay smaller and might have a more mild temperament toward fish of other species.

Thanks for the reply! I am glad you touched on the issue of the pairing. I was concerned about that.

How might two females do together, I wonder?
