One common theme I see on the cichlid forums is problems with kenyii, if they are such trouble-makers why are thy so readily kept?
I went out recently to max out my tanks, and saw some beautiful kenyii, but do to the "bad press" I passed on them.
Also I recentley purchased a venustus, I never cared for them much, but with all the chat about them I gave them a second look and purchased a male. I have found him relatively mild mannered and quite attractive. I can see why so many people keep them.
Regards,
Matt
Hope all you loved ones are safe.

Congratulations on the venustus!
Females are also pretty. Mine is a bronze with golden yellow highlights. I like their patterning. She is also pretty good tempered, despite the fact that she is (and will continue to be) one of the largest fish in the tank.
My only concern for her (since she is with mbuna) is that she gets enough protein, but since she is thriving, I guess the diet she has is good.
With regards to kenyii (lombardoi) I don't have any real "problems" to speak of in terms of aggression, but there are two females to one male, and my tank is truly overcrowded. Maybe that's why it's ok.

Hi Merlyn,
I overcrowded my 55 yesterday with some yellow labs, demasoni's, and cynotilapia afras, this is in addition to 8 socolofi, albino's as well as normal blue variant. Oh and my 3 Ps msosbo deeps. There is so much activity in the tank nobody is subdued.
I'll have to watch my water quality and test a bit more for a while to see how the excess bio-load affects my water chemistry.
Hope all is well.
Regards,
Matt:)

the kennyi are kept because they are very commonly available and they are beautiful...we just caution about their aggressiveness because they can cause a lot of trouble if they are kept with fish that are not equally aggressive.

My male kenyi just took a one way trip back to the IFS last week. I tried putting him in a seperate tank by himself for 3-4 weeks during which time I added an 8" D. compressiceps. When I reintroduced him he was okay for one day and then started his bad boy antics again. He even got into it with the comp. After that he stayed away from the comp, but terrorized every other fish. He was nice looking, but I just couldn't take him anymore. Don't know yet what I'll do with the two females. They aren't as aggressive except toward each other. Too bad they look so nice, that makes it harder to get rid of them. LOL

LFS...local fish store/seller
matt1066 : kenyii are cichlids you have to put with the aggressive types like Auratus, Johannii, Demasoni, Flavus, Socolofi. I have kept all with only minor problems.
There are some mixes of cichlids that do not go together. These others I listed maybe small in size be are on the high scale of aggression and being the most territorial of cichlids. Also remember if the dominant cichlids in a tank are not able to stand up to any new additions then you will have chewed and abused cichlids in your tank. The dominant cichlids in your tank should be the most aggressive type all others must be able to stand up or be compatible. Cheers..... Tony.
