from what i've read on planet catfish, they can grow to 42"SL and will eat anything that isn't big enough not to be eaten and they prefer a ph range between 6 and 7.6.

Tiger shovel nose are really cool, predatory catfish. Before long it would eat all of your africans and then get too big for your tank.

yeah i was worried about how big they get...

Wont the size of the tank stunt their growth? its a 75gal.

Youre on a slippery slope around here saying that tank size will stunt growth. It might but more than likely you will have a miserable fish that can barely move in the tank.

not only will your fish be miserable his life span will be considerably shorter as well. it's not the responsible thing to do, so if you don't have the space for him now or can't provide it in the very near future don't bother getting the fish.:)

Dude, Im with you. I love the big predatory cats. Unlike you, I dont have a huge tank coming, every. Seems like everything I want is just too big for my tank. Check out the size of these T-S-N and red tailed cats. http://www.blueperu.com/Resources/a-peru/redtail-cats.jpg
If I was you, I would wait until I had the 420 before I started to stock it. Just do a lot of research and planning before then so you get exactly what you want.
There are some other really cool shovel nose cats that dont get as large such as the juruense http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/pimelodi/brachypl/566_F.PHP
And the tigrinim http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/pimelodi/brachypl/354_F.PHP
Both could cost you a few bucks but if I had a tank that size, it would be well worth it. Good luck.

If you are looking for something that is predatory, however does not get massive check out a Pimedolas ornatus. They get about 10 inches and are very active. They are about the most personable "small" cat you can own.

I would compare them to a Red tail cat as far as personality.

Tiger shovel-nose cats are the coolest looking freshwater cats in my opinion. My LFS has a 14" one right now. As far as 75 gallon cats there are tons just search around the internet.

Its not just a cat that will fit in a 75gal that im looking for, it has to be a preaditory cat, preferably....

I looked up those Ornate Pimelodus Catfish but they are like $60 EACH!!!

I have a Lima Shovel Nose and one would be fine in a 75gal for mabey a year then you coudl either trade it in or up grade his tank space. They are one of the coolest fish around I suggest you get some. I ahve grown several to around 15-20" and then traded them to a lfs that has a huge tank they keep them in w/ the peacock bass I traded them a few years back.

about how much did you get for them at the 15-20"? maybe i could raise a few then trade them in for money for a bigger tank? =p
