We had a great first meeting, had a small fish auction and began the planning for our next meeting and activities. We had a diverse group of attendees from those who strictly kept African Cichlids, to those who only kept discus, and all kinds in between! We even have a "newbie" (to cichlids, not aquariums) who is looking to set up her first Cichlid tank!
Future activities will include group tours of the Oklahoma Aquarium in Jenks as well as the Tulsa Zoo, fish auctions and hopefully some top caliber guest speakers. We will rotate our meetings between a number of locally owned aquarium/fish stores.
Josh_Schilling is currently our "President" as has done the bulk of the work so far! Many thanks to him for organising our initial meeting at Aquarium Oddballs as well as to Scott for letting us use his store.
OwassoFish, has kindly offered his skills to help in getting a web page going.

I agree, I think it went great. Hopefully we can get a few extra people out at each meeting and get to a point where we can bring in a speaker or two.

Sorry I couldn't make it. I am very interested in attending the meetings, but have about 10 million things going on all the time. I will make all of the meetings that I can.
I keep large CA cichlids and have 3 tanks (55/100/240 gallons)
-mainly keeping Herichthys pearsi and H. bocourti at the present time, with one large Jack Dempsey.
Hopefully see you all in Dec.

This one will be at Oddballs with chairs, presentation from Scott on some Africans. I'll get a flyer out to everyone sometime this weekend.

Idea:
Why don't we come up with a thread, here or otherwise, to track the following:
-What fish stores you plan to be visiting and when...
-People's "want lists"
I know a lot of the time you don't know you want something until you see it. And its hard to come up with a "list" of things that would be cool to have, since everything that is pretty much unobtainable is on that list. But if we could capture the core items, then if someone else sees a particular fish and knows you are looking for it... they can post who has it (either online or at a local store). Any interest in doing this? Or maybe just posts like "was in xyz store today, they had a,b,c".
I was in John's store today. I go in Love a Pet and PetsMart on 71st, all the time, Southern Ag only rarely. I do know PetStop in Owasso gets in the occasional cool item. Anyone been in Premier Aquatics yet? Of course I've been to Scotts quite a few times lately. The PetsMart in Owasso had some more variety than usual. The out of town shops would be great to know.

Does he have any "tangs"? Or just SA/CA stuff?
josh_shilling
12-06-2005, 03:14 PM
Mostly SA/CA-
http://www.tangledupincichlids.com/stock.html
He does have Oreochromis tanganicae (that blue monster in the Paul Loiselle book 'The Cichlid Aquarium', for example), and some Syno's. Looks like all except large males are pretty much big silver tilapia looking fish though.

Hey everyone- I'm going to miss this one.
Hope everyone has a good time. I'll definitely be at the next one. I have two days to move my entire fish room from one end of the house to the other- and one of those days is tomorrow. But hey I get a bigger fish room out of the deal. It was on very short notice.

Not too much....I think it was a bad date (being so close to the holidays)...we just kinda bs'd about cichlids and fish and hung out for a while...kinda a small crowd....Did a little planning for future meetings...planned out some talks...we need to be able to show powerpoint presentations, so we need either a digi projector or a facility that has one...

Would everyone be open to touring the Jenks facility sometime in June, probably on a saturday or sunday afternoon?
The Texas Cichlid Association / OKCAA joint meeting occurs in June and some interest has been expressed in doing a tour of Jenks for that meeting. Rumor has it the auction went on for 4 hours last year, with 55 gallon tanks being sold for $20.
Also of interest- I heard a rumor that 50th ACA Convention could be in OKC in 2008, since the 1st one in 1958 was in OKC.

I don't know if it was 4 hours, but it did seem to go several hours at least.

Count me in. I would like to tour the new OK Aquarium facility regardless. I've been several times but would love to see some behind the scenes goodies! June is good too, except the first week of June.

At one time, I think Scott said something about trying to get them to do an African set up. That would be a good idea and would look great also.
Seedy

Yeah....I'd set up a Malawi Predator tank for them at no charge!(beyond cost)
I'm not even sure if they have a single cichlid in the whole building....
I do know that the zoo has a ton of huge sa/ca Cichlids in the rainforest exhibit.

Yeah, I agree the Jenks thing is kindof not so great on the cichlids.
They do have some stuff behind the scenes, apparently, like Arapima. Scott knows about some of it, I guess since he buys it for them.
The behind-the-scenes tour of the zoo was top notch. Maybe both could be done, although that would make a heck of a full day. The only thing that disappointed me- they don't have a better viewing area for that pond. Next time I'll bring a wet suit. But they also have some interesting stuff off-exhibit. The sizes to me are amazing. Right when you enter, they have a tankfull of 6" Thorichthys meeki. You just don't see them at that size, really ever.

Did you miss ACA this year? I swear there was several bags of meeki that were about 6". I'd forgotten how big they can get.
