how can you tell the difference between a con female and a con male? i just picked up 2 at the LFS and told them i wanted a pair and they had no clue, i have one that has quite a bit of orange around the gills and body and one that barely has any if any at all..are these a pair of male/female?

they said i can bring them back anytime to swap for the opposite mate so

i can only guess, the color on the fish isnt good enough to able me to distinguish the sex, but my personal guess would be female.

yeah, you might have to wait a while, let them get more comfortable in the tank, then take pics for us to determine. the two cons are very washed out in the pics so it's hard to tell for sure.

You're right about the one being female, but it's hard to tell about the other one. If you see any red at all on the other one's side/belly, then it's definitely female; otherwise you'll be overloaded with fry in no time.

yep, 1 is def a female. 2 i'm not sure. there's no orange (right now) like a male but the belly is pretty round like a female

its still kind of hard to tell, but the hint of red under its body is a good sign that its a female. ubt being that its young and the color isnt the greatest yet, you neva no.

Are you sure that your fish is thoroughbred Convict Cichlid?

Looks like hybrid Archocentrus nigrofasciatus (Convict) & Herotilapia multispinosa

no clue, actualy at this moment im more worried about the ick in the tank, im actualy letting thebucket fill up right now, tanks almost empty im doin like a 70% water change since the firemout already died and both cons are covered in ick

I don't think it looks at all like a herotilapia multispinosa. If anything, in the pics with white light at the beginning of this thread, it looks as though it could be a "blue convict" convict/honduran redpoint. However convicts are SOOOO common that it is unlikely that you have anything other than a regular ol' convict :)

agreed

the one is definitely female, the other I wouldn't say anything for sure yet. If it is female then you should see orange on the belly/abdomen starting to appear anytime in the next week or so.

ok well what seems to be the female has ALOT of red on her belly, and i notice at times she turns very black when startled, but then goes back to being a light white

the other guy on the other hand has no red on him. but the female has been chasing him a very lot lately, he has alot of nips in his tail and after he gets chased he goes and lays sideways at the top of the tank, in the airbubbles, right where the filter dumps back into teh tank, sits there for 5 minutes or so, then comes down, she chases him some more and he goes back up there...and then sometimes they hang out together, i dont know whats up
