This is not necessarily for beginners, but I couldn't think of anywhere better to put it:

I am looking for a comprehensive book on cichlids - I want color plates and good descriptions of habits, diets, agressiveness, etc. I am mostly interested in Africans. What book should I buy?

my vote is for ad konigs' cichlids and all the other fishes of lake malawi...for lake malawi...seehausen's lake victoria rock cichlids...for the vics, and pierre brichard's cichlids and all the other fishes of lake tanganyika...for the tangs.

Hey All 8) Speaking of cichlid books, I just finished a great one that I would like to share with everyone. It's called "The Cichlid Fishes" by George W. Barlow. You will not find it listed as an aquarium book, and I stumbled on it by accident. It is considered a scientific text and I found my copy in the biology section at Borders.

George w. barlow is a research biologist who has been studying cichlids for decades. The book covers history, evolution and behavior of cichlids extensively. Most of his clinical experiments are done with New World cichlids, especially Central Americans from the Midas complex, which makes this book almost a "must read" for American Cichlid fans. He also delves into Old World fish, including East African, West African, and the more primitive Chromides native to Southeast Asia.

I can't remember the last aquarium book I've read that had so much information that I hadn't already read 100 times  Go out and grab a copy. You'll be glad you did 8)

I've also been keeping my eye out for African cichlid books. Particularly a book that would tell me more about cichlids in their natural habitat-not just what they are like in an aquarium any suggestions :?:

Malawi Master, check out Konings "Malawi Cichlids in their natural habitat #3" And "Tanganyikan Cichlids in their natural habitat #2"
You can order from cichlid press or aquabid has an affiliate can't remember the name, I do remember they were the cheapest.
Don't do Amazon unless you want to feel like you've just been raped

I was curious about [u:6fde615a23]A Complete Lexicon Of Cichlids[/u:6fde615a23] by Dr. Herbert R. Axelrod. Has anyone glanced through it?

just received my copy--it is huge! i was disappointed in the section on lake victoria haps, though. i had loiselles's [u:6ac147e4b5]the cichlid aquarium[/u:6ac147e4b5] on my wish list at amazon.com and somebody ordered it for me!

also, on the way from england is p h greenwood's THE CICHLID FISHES OF LAKE VICTORIA, EAST AFRICA, and from germany, "Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwater" (Vol.9 No.2, 1998) --so the collection is steadily growing...running out of room...and money...

and don't forget the tepoots' "pictorial guide" vol.'s 1 and 2--they are great for providing pics of females.
