How can I tell the difference from males and females C. Moori, most other you can usually tell by the anal fins and the colours, but I'm clueless with these fish. :?

With Mooris you can't tell until they get older, the males will develop a lump of fat on their foreheads (like a frontosa) the female's won't. Other than that, until they get up to around 4-5 inches the males and females look identicle.

hopt this helps...

thank for the info., but I didn't know that only the male develope a lump. I thought they both do. I was also told that the male will get larger, but not too sure on how big people have told me the male will get about up to 10" and some have said that they will get as big as 18". I s that true?

But getting back to to the topic, I was hopping there was a easy way to tell at the early stage, to avoid buying more of one type of fish like frontosa.

Hey lil-crab,
I've just bought 5 of them myself because I want at least a male and female and there aren't any ways to sex them so young so buying 5 most likey will give me a male and female. They're also supose to grow very slow. But when they get full grown, at whatever inches 8"- 12" or whatever the male is supposed to have grown bigger with a bigger fatty head. This is just from reading on the net and searching myself lately.

Well, I know for sure I have one male for sure, due to the fact that he has all the characteristic of a male, features and behavior. I think have more male than I do out of the 6 I have, which I prefer more females.

The males develop a larger hump on their head. They may also be slightly darker blue, especially when displaying.

I have found that C. moorii are actually fast growers. I ahve kept them on and off for about 10 years, excellent fish. Never have seen one over 10" though. My adults actually never reached over 8" in SL. Mine might have grown quickly because of the high protein diet i feed them...lots of chopped shrimp and clams-Oh how they love clam. Go buy a few and steam them, then freeze the clam and whan ready to serve take a razor and chop -up the amount you need. I also do this with my shrimp and white fish. Don't feed them anu oily fish like salmon or blue fish. Cod, flounder, orange rouughy, grouper, red snapper-just to name a few. Firm white flesh is what your looking for, but Oh how they love clams.

Matt

Hi FOx,

How are you and your fish. Don't worry I doubt they would care for humam flesh.

If you look under the "general" section under aquarium set-up-poll: you will see that I finally took stock of my tanks and equipment. I would be interested in a critique as I value your opinion. You too SGM, Merlyn, Mbuniac, Adam, and fishfan. Do you think I am over-stocked, and what about compatability? Hybridization is not an issue for me as I dont intend to breed them. If they do breed i will just let nature take its course wtih no help from me.

What do you think of the new Forum format? I don't adapt well to sudden change, so I am not sure yet. The major issue I have is with the Bold and itallisize(sp) buttons, you have to do it as you go along, you cant go back and customize the post after review like you can in MS word.

Oh, yesterday I went to Petsmart to spend a $17 credit I had, and I purchased 2 Ps acei for the Hap tank, and a Bumblebee for the Mbuna tank. I also purchased an unknown from the "assorted african" tank, I thought it might be a juvie Sci fryeri, have not seen him today. I think Momma anagenys got him, as she was doing a bit of stalking yesterday. I thought he.she would be OK with all the caves/holes I have. I'll look better later.

Hope all is well with everyone.

Matt

THE ONLY WAY IS TO VENT YOU FISH,
THEY ARE VERY SLOW GROWERS COMPARE TO THE FRONTOSA
WITCH IS ALSO AN SLOW GROWER BUT THE C.moorii MALE FORMS
AN LAGER HUMP ON THE HEAD THAN THE FEMALE ALSO GROWS
AN BIT FASTER,
