im just wondering what type of fish i have. i got it from the lps and it was listed as a red devil. although it was in the same tank as were red terrors. and there is also another tank of just midas right below. i've had it for about 6 months now and i've had it since it was about 2 inches long. as soon as i put it in with my texas cichlid it went right after it. it got beaten up im assuming because the next day it was hiding in the skull whenever the texas came out. but now it's almost a size and a half bigger than my texas. i think my texas is too scared of something and it wont eat. (they're in different tanks). my texas used to hide in the castle whenever i was around so now i've taken it out and it just digs a hole in the rocks and hides there. my red devil is currently trying to get used to eating bigger fish. i normally feed it the really small feeder fish and beefheart. but now im trying to keep him/her from eating all the fish i put in there overnight. i would also like to know if it's a male or female?

Its not healthy to feed live feeders to them on a regular basis unless you are raising the feeders yourself or are quarintining them for up to 4 weeks. this is because feeders can potentially introduce bacteria which can kill your fish. feed them pellets, and various other meaty foods that are safer and more nutricious than feeder fish.HTH.

how would i go about quarantining the feeder fish? and what types of foods should i feed them then? it's hard for me to find out what my texas likes since he wont eat any feeders anymore but only eats mealworms? are mealworms good for them? and i just read today to feed them crickets, is this good? and also i feed them red mosquito larvae bloodworms, how is this? they both will eat this. except for my texas doesnt get to eat too much of the bloodworms cubes due to my greedy frogs. my frogs are about the size of a nickel, but they're really territorial when it comes to food. they stand up to my texas and my texas just runs off and will try to sneak up and get ONE bloodworm. it's pretty funny, but what should i do?

Quaranteening means putting them in thier own tank for a while. I think 2 weeks in quaranteen would be enough myself.

I think it boils down to knowing your source.

as for feed your texas try floating pellets.

Mealworms, crickets & bloodworms are great foods for your Texas. One thing that has helped me with my CA cichlids is to figure out where they like to eat & feed accordingly. Surface, middle, bottom.
Eventually your Texas will eat your frogs.

Unless they are those wierd african clawed frogs, from what I have heard they get huge and can handle a cichlid's attitude.

oh and also, i get my feeder fish from petsmart. it's the only place we have around here as far as pet stores. except for walmart, but they want 25 cents for one feeder fish. ha. and they're only 12 cents at petsmart. and i've tried to put the feeder fish in their own tank for a while, i was gonna keep em there til they got a bit bigger, that way they wont be just small snacks for my fish. sort of a beef up tank, but they started dying left and right, so i just put em in the murder tanks.
and i figured as much with the frogs and the texas, i just hope he doesnt do it before i get this new tank that way i can set up a tropical tank and put them in there and they will be safer.

sorry it's so long, but another thing, i was reading earlier that someone said that bloodworms and beefheart aren't good for my texas or red devil/midas, how true is this? because i used to only feed my red devil beefheart, as i was told it would help them grow a lot faster which may be true as he's a lot bigger than my texas now and he's younger, but how true is this? my texas won't eat the beefheart, and my red devil can't get enough of it.

my frogs have pretty small claws right now, but i've seen them as big as a quarter and a little bigger. although im not sure if they were fully grown or not

Bloodworms are fine. Beefheart is OK once or twice a week for a treat. Beefheart can speed growth, but as it is not part of a cichlids natural diet I wouldn't recommend it daily or over an extended period of time.

Glaive - Whta kind of frogs are you referring to? I just assumed the african clawed frogs because that's the only kind I have ever seen available here that is fully aquatic.

I am sure we are thinking of the same ones. Unless theyare the dwarf variety they may well hit a decent size. Most of what i read says they do better in stagnant water and are very messy. Like oscars if it fits in thier mouth it is dinner. they are described as peaceful, but some stories I have heard from friends leads me to believe they can hang wityh the texas.

I would watch them carefully.

yea, they are greedy little things. if they get to the frozen cubes of bloodworms, or beefheart, or brine shrimp first, then u can forget about it. i've caught my texas trying to do swim by grabs of the food. im assuming he/she knows better now. and yes they try to stuff the whole thing in their mouths, they try to get all of it so nothing else can get any. they even fight with each other. the third one i had died due to gorging himself, i thought that was pretty funny, although it did upset me a bit. but now i must know what gender and species of fish i have, please someone let me know

This will probably answer your question, especially if you got the fish at PetsMart: http://www.cichlidforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=14400 .

As far as diet is concerned, especially for the Texas (looks like a "Green Texas" from the photos:)), don't neglect including some veggies: lots of herichthys are strongly herbivorous.

Well, that's easier is just raising feeders and feed those to your texas. They would be a better quality then the ones at a pet shop anyway. Take it from me. I use to work at petsmart. Feeders would have to be quaranted for atleast 2 weeks and by that time they'd probably all be dead. Not worth it. I use to scoop feeders for people all the time. I got some people who'd come back to me each week feeding their fish. Some of them would tell me that acople would die in the bag on the way home. Oh, and it wasn't because I scooped dies. I always gave people live feeders.

Take my advice, breed them yourself. Just get a old tank or buy a 26gal garbage can for your basement. Put a heater, make a diy powerhead sponge filter, and harvest when needed.

and i just read today to feed them crickets, is this good?

Feeding wise you sound like you are tryin to get alot of variety in his/her diet. That's good. Keep up the good work.

Hey,
My red devil looked just like that. But mine died about a year ago. Best fish I ever had.
