View Full Version : G Acei
I got 4 of these guys for my breeder jags to chase around. To tell you the truth they are beautiful and I am wondering whether I should throw them in my african tanks with either my bleekeri moori tanks, or my tang peaock tank. What is the agression like on these guys? I know they are mbuna so I get worried about mixing. I could go get some cheap firemouths or something for these two to chase around.

How dare you stress those Jags with G Acei!!!
G Acei are my favorite rock fish. They are fiesty, but not over bearing, great for any african community tank with the same feeding regimne. Their blue color is reminescent of some of our favorite haps, and their nice yellow tail sets them apart from just about everything. Mine has always held his own against the likes of Ps. Socolufi.
Now I wait to be beaten soundly with a frozen trout by SGM.
Ok OW I am on my way home and my Acei are coming with me.
I will wait till there is some aggression then figure it out from there.

overawed--i would never beat you with a frozen trout...a thawed one, maybe  no, actually i pretty much agree with you. i've had two varieties of what i still call pseudotropheus acei(i think that there are still some arguments going around about the genus) the ones that i have right now are the ones with the white edging instead of the yellow. i would say that they behave pretty much like ps. crabro--they basically mind their own business, but don't allow themselves to be pushed around too much.
The only fish my Acei ever really bothered was my common pleco for some reason. They didn't like him and would nip at his top sail fin if he had it up. I have mine in a 55 gallon mixed Mbuna setup with Lombardoi, Socolofi, Elongatus, Callionos, and Johanni. They are probably the least aggressive in the tank, at least the two smaller ones are. The 5" male holds his own but usually doesn't start the brawl, like the Lombardoi males like to do  Mine are neat, and act quite a bit diffferent from the others around feeding time. They peek the snouts of their mouths out of the water, and if I don't feed them at the timing they want they kick at the surface of the water lol. They are some of my favorite Africans to keep.

How about some silver dollars for the jags to chase? They're fast, active swimmers and if they get caught at least they're not cichlids. They're also deep bodied so they're less tempting to eat.

Does G acei have a common name? The people that run our local pet shop have no clue about scientific names. They tried to tell me that the Red Zebra that I bought were Red top Cobalt Zebras. I haven't had enough nerve to order by mail yet.

i don't think that they have a common name; the lfs might recognize the old name: pseudotropheus acei. most lake cichlids don't have common names.
Well my G.Acei are great. For Mbuna they sure don't act like them. they are peaceful and school around quite happy in my 90. Noone bothers them and they definatley don't bother any one in there. They mostly swim mid a waters looking for spirulina.
I am prety happy I didn't let them get beat up by the jags. Every fish deserve a good home.
Does G acei have a common name?
No doubt others on this board have information I don't (how's that for an understatement); but as far as I know, "acei" is the common name. What the ps. "acei" lacks is a scientific name; it's not yet been formally described and proposed as a species in the scientific literature for reference (and, possibly, refutation).

Thanks for the info! I'll try P. acei and G. acei and maybe they can locate them that way. If not then I'll consider mail order . Anyone with good reports on who to order from?
