View Full Version : Feather Rock?

I went to a local stone yard yesterday and got .01 of a ton  of lava rocks and .02 of a ton of feather rock. Both cost me $20 and I think it works out to about 60 lbs. Some of the feather rock floats when you put it in water, so it has to be placed under something heavier. That is not my concern, though. Before I put it in the tank, I want to know if anyone uses it. It seems to me to be no worse than the lava or lace rock in sharpness, but I'm not sure what to do. I carved out a nice little cave in one piece, because it's really easy to carve. I'm dying to see my fish enjoy them, but don't know if I can really use it or not.
The other thing is, does anyone know if lace rock is also sometimes called moss rock. I saw something about this a couple of months ago on some site, but never bookmarked it, so can't go back to check.
My last concern about the rocks in general is how many pounds can you really put in any given tank. I would imagine since the water is displaced by them, their weight takes up the weight lost in water.
I don't know...it sounded logical when I first thought it.
Anyway let me know your opinions.

good score on the rock, never heard the lace rock called moss rock, it does have that weird moss on it though the orange/yellow stuff, I used to know what it was called when I had a memory :?
I know theres been previous threads on the weight of rocks (this could of been before the last crash, don't worry I just knocked on wood Tom), and I had found the answer on another site rock weight per gallon but I can't remember that either :?

Duh....uh yeah, that's it. My brain has truly graduated to mashed potato state!
I kept saying to Tom, I know what it's really called, but I just can't think of the name!
Thanks, SGypsy.
Now do you think it would be ok to use in the tank? Otherwise I'll just put it in the garden.

Me either. I can't find it for lava rock, either, though. I have a Science teacher at work checking on it for me.

Boilermaker, I think it might also be called "Gray slag." Check out this link and see what you think.

I'm sure lace rock is volcanic and so is this feather rock, but I can't find anything that says what it is.
And actually SGypsy, it isn't true pumice. This is more of a glass like rock.
I'm going to bed now, but tomorrow I'm going to put a post up with a picture of it. Maybe you could help me figure it out then. :D
