Correction. Something was wrong. Thats why he died. It may or may not have been preventable. I can't remember all the details for you tank, so I'm going to ask some questions. If you can answer them, we can probably figure out what it was.

How big was the tank?

When was it setup?

Are you positive that it was completely cycled?

Are there any other tankmates?

What are the water conditions? (Temp., pH, Hardness, Ammonia, Nitrites, Nitrates)

Have any new decorations or anything been added to the tank within the last week?

Did the fish show any symptoms prior to you finding it dead?

How does it look now? (Fins, scales, eyes, etc.)

Sorry about your loss. We'll try to get to the bottom of this. Think of it this way, now you have a chance to start you tank again, from scratch, with no mistakes.

the tank was only a 30 gallon but he wasnt any bigger than 3 inches i had plenty of terratories and caves only him and the jag were in there because i got rid of the other fish weaks before. The tank has been running for months and weaks before i put the fish in and i had feeder guppies in before the other fish were put in and the ph was normal.

the tempeture was 78 im not sure about nitrates or whatever it is i dont know much about that But i know the ph was neutral there were no decarations added recently within months. The fish had blue ish color eyes prior to the death. and also about 2 days befor he started to float around the top and let the filter water hit him and he also laid at the bottom a little. But everything else was normal with the way he looked and his fins and body.... maybe this will help

sorry for your loss. It sounds like you need to buy a test kit, before you buy your new fish, they don't cost much, you can normally find one that has everything you need for under 20 bucks. some people don't use them but i like to know whats going on in my tanks before i have a problem. how often did you do water changes? what kind of filter do you have?

Welp you could have had a major spike in Ammonia or nitrites but we wont know untill you can test your water and even then the spike could or will probley be gone, since you did weekly water changes ill assume your nitrate levels were not to high, this is a dumb question but do you use dechlorinator? and you said the eyes where blue? was it a cloudy looking color or was it just his normal eye color?

We'll I really don't know what it was. But if your heater didn't stick on and kill it, then it probably was the water conditions. Be sure to do a %50 water change before add more fish.

Good luck
