I'm not sure what lake my Cichlid is from. He is an orange Kenyi Cichlid who lives alone in a 5.5 bowfront. He has been alone for over 2 months when I removed the other cichlid in the tank. Every 3 weeks or so, a large lump appears underneath his jaw. It usually goes away after 3 or 4 days. During the time when he has the lump, he wont eat and it particularily aggresive.

What is going on?

Are you sure he is a 'he'?

I agree, what's the proof it's a he? Sounds like a she, being a mouth brooder, they keep the eggs in their mouth till hatched.

Well the original post mentions that the fish is alone in the tank so actually hatching the eggs isn't gonna happen but she may be holding unfertilized eggs.

For that matter, they sometimes hold gravel too.

5.5 g is awful small for a cichlid.

"Orange kenyi cichlid" might be a female red zebra since kenyii aren't orange.

I dont know its sex or species. It was sold as KENYI, is there anything else this lump could be?

The described behavior sure sounds like holding eggs. I can't think of anything else that it might be.

The fish may be Pseudotropheus Kenyii which is now known as Maylandia lombardoi (I think?). If I remember right, the females are blue with dark vertical bars while the males are yellow with dark vertical bars. I actually have some, but they've never bred and I can't remember the sexes for sure without looking it up. If you Google searched "kenyii" or "lombardoi" it would get you pictures to compare with your fish.

A red zebra (Maylandi estherae) looks like kenyii, but most of them are a striking orange color (like goldfish). Some males are blue, but most look like the orange female.

Yeah it looks like that. Except with the lump, of course.
