Great article by Todd Wenzel, who has probably dechlorinated a million litres since it was published, now available on-line:

I agree. Will have to read it again earlier in the day to get the most of it though.

I'll stick to the $2.00 bottle of Chlor Out. It treats 679 gallons with a 4 oz bottle. That's cost effective enough for me. :D

i've never heard of chlor out--does it treat chloramines, too? where do you get it?

Chlor out by Wardley is available at WalMart and I think on-line at BigAl's. It treat chlorine and Chloramines.

I know, you don't have WalMarts in NYC. :(

Ordering decholrinating juice from BigAls?? My local grocery store sells the stuff! Is it that hard to come by out yonder? While I am a DIY kind of guy, if it involves chemicals, I stick to the pre-packaged stuff. Now, if I ever build that 100,000 gallon tank I may change my ways... :)

I agree chennes, I would usually DIY but with the fish and tanks I have pre package is good enough for me. BUT it's very interesting to know that information though.

I prefer Prime by Seachem. It has good value, one cap treats 50g. I have also seen my breeding increase since I have made the change about two months ago. I am not sure if it is related but who knows since the total water quality is better.

Here is an interesting link on chloramines.Up in the top left hand corner it has a list of cities that use chloramines though I would'nt trust this as my only source. It would be a good idea to call the local water plant and ask if they use chloramines. If they do your water conditioner needs to convert chlorine, chloramines and ammonia.Seachem Prime goes the extra mile and handles nitrates, nitrite, and heavy metals.A little bit goes a long way.Good stuff!

I used to work at the local Big Al's (when I was a wee lad), I have been using the Wardley's Chlor-out for a few years as it is very low dose (read that cost-effective). In my experience over the years, less is more when it comes to chemicals, the only reason that I use the Chlor-out at all is because the local water plant uses chloramine. If I lived in an area that used only chlorine I would prefer to simply use time and aeration to gas off the chlorine.
