There are two reasons I love the fall. Firstly it is hunting season. Secondly every fish store you go into there is large central and south american cichlids that seem to turn up. I think it is because people with ponds bring in their pond fish for the winter so have to get rid of the 30 inch dovii in their 180 in the house.
I went to fish shops with my daughter all last night and all I saw was peacock bass, red devils, jags, and other americans. Every shop seemed to have 3-4 jack dempseys one was really large I might add. I saw 2 wild caught black oscars that I wanted bad. I am not a huge oscar fan do to the fact that you may as well get rid of your toilet and use your tank as they are not much cleaner. Great personalities though. I loved these guys though they were 3 inches and almost looked like they had aztec writing on them. The 10 inch peacock bass that had more charisma than you could shake a stick at. A beatiful pair of really large jags protecting their fry. The Trimac that they had listed as a large assorted african. The guy telling me that the fish I was looking at was not a buttikoferi, it was a Tilipia (west african I know) and it would be fine with one of the larger oscars they had. What? How big of tank I said the polite gentleman without a sinff told me that as long as I stick to one inch per gallon I would be o.k. It was amazing and sad at the same time. Amazing that all these fish were within $20-30 dollars away and sad that most of them were stuck in these 20 gallon wide aquariums at fish stores that have no sniff about how beautiful these fish are. I am half tempted to get rid of my flowerhorn and pic something up. Do your self a favor and go down to the biggest chain of pet store that you can find and pic the fish that doesn't belong there. Take him home and feed him shrimp. He or she deserve it. I love americans.
