Honestly I just use a paper towel and some elbow grease. You could try vinegar and water just be wary of getting any into your tank water.

I have been using regular glass cleaner (Windex) for 20 years, and have never had a problem. Just spray it lightly on a paper towel rather than directly onto the tank (don't want to risk over spray into the tank), and then use a dry paper towel to polish out any streaks. I have also heard that using Newspaper instead of cloth helps reduce lint and streaks.

Newspaper wont leave streaks. Thats what I use to clean. Well when I clean the glass. LOL

I have a holy towel I use for such things. we call it the fish towel I just dip a little bit into the tank and scrub like a freak....(gotta do that tonight as a matter of fact.

for the inside I use an extra AC sponge to scrub with... I know you asked about outside, but figured I'd throw it in there

Get a lemon or lime and cut it in half and rub that on it.

Yes, the lemon juice thing works in a pinch.

I just try to keep mine pretty clean with a wet hand towel and a squeegee.
