Hi All. I have a real quick question for anyone who can help. When i awoke this morning i turned on the lights on my tanks and started to feed my fish their breakfast when i noticed my moogri (blue dolphin) looked as if he was sheding his skin. It don't look to healthly. I have never had this problem and he is the only one in the tank that looks like that. All of his fins are like they are rotting away. I did a check on the water conditions and everything is fine. can someone please help i don't want my fish to die and i want them all to be healthly. What is going on??????

Maybe bacterial fin rot? If so you need antibiotics; maybe maracyn or maracyn 2. Others too, if this is the problem.

I would isolate him and treat him with appropriate medication as soon as possible.

Was this a sudden thing? If so maybe there was some agression going on and he had his fins nipped off. Otherwise, it most probably happened gradually and he has fin rot. I did a Google search and this is what I found.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

Things are looking pretty bad. I don't think he is gonna make it through the night. I don't understand. Now he is swimming upside down and bobbing up and down like a bottle. It was a very sudden thing. I keep a very close eye on my fish eveyday and all has been fine. none of the other fish in the tank have the fin rot and it just happened to him(like overnight) and the worst thing is i don't have anywhere to put him. The only other tank i have is being used for my fry. I really hope he pulls through. I am going to get some antibotics in the morning if he makes it till then.

Sorry to hear that. It seems that the fish is already too far gone to treat. If it did indeed have a bacterial fin rot, this might have progressed to other organs and systems in the body. This would explain why it is behaving like this.

Did you recently do a water change? Do you live in a cold climate?

Keep us posted.

How are the other fish? Do they show any signs of disease?

What are your water conditions like? pH, ammonia, nitrites, nitrates
What is the temperature?
What is the diet for the fish?
Have you fed live foods recently?
How long did you have this fish?

Maybe by looking at all these factors together, you can determine what caused this fish's problem.

I forgot to mention before...
You should observe the other fish in the tank, to see if they show any signs that the other fish had. It might be worth your while to medicate the tank.

Try gradually raising the temperature to 84 degrees. Put in some aquarium salt, according to the dosage for medication (I think it is one tablespoon for 5 gallons, but check it out). Do this for three days, then do a 50% water change and gradually lower the temp to whatever you had it at before. Hopefully this was around 78-80 degrees, anyway.

If you notice any fish now, that show the same signs as the other, get to the lfs and get some broad spectrum antibiotics.
