measurements/ gallons/ sizes.....

I am trying to get a visual on what I can have for max size in my apartment...
What is the formula for calculating how many gallons a tank is?...... I am not sure this makes sence... as an example..... If I want a tank 4 ft by 2 ft by 3 ft high.... how would I know how many gallons it is.... I have a tank 30"W x 12"D x 18"H .... I am told it's 35 gallons..... but how do I know for sure?

Sounds more like 28g than 35g. Most tanks are smaller than advertised.
