when i got my first tank at age 12, i purchased the innes book:exotic tropical fish and over the years, i read it cover to cover many times. although, a lot of the info in my old edition is now outdated, i still refer to it from time to time when looking for info on a particular species of fish. my aquarium library has now grown to over 100 books! of course, you don't need quite that many  (i have a book fetish in addition to a few others: fabric, shoes, beads, etc.) but there's nothing like being able to grab a couple of books to research information on a particular genus, species, or whatever.

another way to get information is to do a google search using keywords. you can also look for photos of a particular fish by doing a google image search.

and finally, you can read discussion forums to get the info that you need. with all of these methods, you will find that you often get conflicting information. sometimes it's because different people have had different experiences with the same fish. sometimes it's due to error, and sometimes, it's just pure b.s.--keep reading, and you'll eventually find the info that will work best in your particular circumstances.
