Anyone ever consider using this to make a DIY background?

Does that make the ph go up the same as regular lava rock?

I though lava rock was inert. I could be wrong.

lava rock doesnt do anything to the water dj. maybe you are thinking of holey rock, limestone.

And no feather rock should not effect water chemistry. It's just a matter of finding some.

I know that this is kind of late but I did use a large piece of feather rock in the tank. It looks really nice and the fish seem to love it. They all gather in it most of the time when the light is off. They also chase each other in and out of it all the time. But I havent seen any effect on the ph.

I bought 2 hunks in Home Depot... they sell it in the landscape section - must clean REAL WELL!! BOIL/ BAKE and pressure clean (or strong hose)... Then carved with an old hacksaw (use an old one, cause when you're done you will throw the hacksaw away - it's ruined!)
came out real nice - made tunnel in center... fish loved it!
