My daughter just completed a science project using fishless cycling.

Fishless cycling with Pure Ammonia is a way to get around the newer requirements in Science Projects that discourage harm to animals.

She used 2 10 gallon tanks. One with new rocks and a new filter and the other with rocks from a cycled tank and a new filter.

Her hypothesis was that the second tank with the cycled rocks would cycle faster.

Her conclusion was that the New tank cycled faster because the tank with cycled rocks handled some of the initial ammonia but had to build more bacteria to handle the rest of it. (Basically we overpowered the bacteria so it had to play catch up.)

We included spreadsheets of the data and charts of the data from Excel.

She learned a lot about the nitrogen cycle and I'm very proud of her for taking my suggestion and working on it.

Good idea for a school project! That was probably real fun for her to do.
