LOTS of smart cichlidiots out there. CONGRATS
September Question:
[quote:d2f00ed552][b:d2f00ed552]The Haplochromis cichlids from Lake Malawi are spectacular. Why were the Haps given this name - Haplochromis?
a.Because of their unique feeding habits. 15%
b.Dead fish turn brown. 69%
c.Malawi cichlids are always happy. 15%[/b:d2f00ed552][/quote:d2f00ed552]
"Haplochromis" means "simple colour" or "single colour." Why were all those spectacular multicoloured fish from Milawi called haplochromes? According to Marc Elieson's great article, "How Cichlids Get Named":
[quote:d2f00ed552]...Many of the early Haplochromines exported from Lake Malawi prior to 1970 were the large, monochromatic predators. Not to mention that taxonomists classifying these fish were looking at months- or years-dead, preserved and faded specimens. http://www.vatoelvis.com/Naming.html [/quote:d2f00ed552]
So the best available answer was b.
The Bonus Question:
[quote:d2f00ed552][b:d2f00ed552]The neon tetra, from Peru, has become one of the most popular aquarium fishes in the hobby. How did it get to North America?
a. By ocean on the Lusitania. 14%
b. On the Hindenberg, via Germany. 28%
c. By direct airmail post from Lima to NYC. 57% [/b:d2f00ed552][/quote:d2f00ed552]
This one was apparently tougher. The answer:
[quote:d2f00ed552]... [Prior to 1950, the busiest year for Chicago's John G. Shedd Aquarium] may have been 1931, when almost 4.7 million visitors checked out the opening of the last six galleries plus the "balanced aquarium room," later called Tributaries. But when it comes to buzz, the most anticipated singular event was the arrival of Lonely Lindy, a neon tetra from South America. The fish, the first neon tetra ever displayed in this country, arrived via Germany aboard the Hindenburg, on July 13, 1936. http://metromix.com/top/1,1419,M-Metromix-Museums-0!ArticleDetail-13091,00.html [/quote:d2f00ed552]
At over 800 feet in length and 135 feet in diameter, the German passenger airship Hindenburg (LZ-129) was the largest aircraft ever to fly. It exploded into flames at NAS Lakehurst on 06 May 1937. Thirty-six lost their lives in that tragic accident: thirteen passengers, twenty-two crewmen, and one civilian member of the ground crew. Lonely Lindy was not aboard.
