I went to feed my fish yesterday (Jan. 4, 2003) and when I put the food in the tank one of my Geophagus Jurupari went nuts and swam from one side of the tank hit the glass and swam to the othor side of the tank and hit the glass again. Then when I got home the next day, I noticed he was in the bottom corner of the tank, just sitting there. When I walked by he swam hard to the other side of the tank, hit the glass and then stopped. I looked at him and noticed that his color is a lot lighter and he is not balanced like he used to be. If anyone has any info at all please respond. Thanks a lot!! :D

Thanks,
Aaron

Are any other fish affected?
How big is your tank and what type of filtration do you use?
Have you tested your water lately? Is the pH too high or low?
How is the ammonia? What are the nitrites?
Has any chemical been used in or around the tank recently?

There is the possibilty that this may be some type of poisoning judging by what you describe. Personally, I would isolate the fish and do a water change in the main tank, then observe the fish to see if he swims better and his color returns in isolation. If he does, you obviously know that it was poisoning.

The other possibility is that the fish has some type of swim bladder problem that is causing the fish to be "unbalanced." This may or may not be the end result of a water chemistry problem.

Good luck.

Thanks a lot for replying. :D None of the other fish are affected. The tank is 29 gallons and I am usuing a whisper 30-60. I haven't tested the water lately but when I am done writing this I will do so. And no Chemical has been used around it. Thanks again for replying. :D

Thanks a lot,
Aaron

The PH of my water is about 7.4. Unfortunately he passed away the next day. :bawl: All the other fish seem to be doing just fine. I also did a 50% water change just in case there was something in the water.

Thanks,
Aaron

As I was reading about this fish, I noticed you said your pH was 7.4. Isn't that a little high for them (assuming they are SA). I thought they liked the water closer to 7 :?:

Could that be it? Or have they always lived in water with that pH level?

When I had bought them the stores PH was about 7.4. It seemed a little wierd to me but my other Geophagus Jurupari is doing just fine. So I don't know what happened. Thanks for the reply!!

Thanks.
