I recently bought a group of fish, all from the lfs labeled as carpintis, hoping to get a breeding couple. After more closely examining them at home, one is noticeably different from the others. The coloration is the same, but this one has smaller spots...which COULD just be because the fish is smaller than the rest, or it could be that they had a regular texas mixed in. Here's a shot of 2 for comparison. What do you think?
The one on the right looks like a texas but the one on the left to me looks like a Hybrid Texas/Jag Mix but my eyes arnt to good so dont go by what ive said lol

I think it's more the camera than your eyes. The color of the spangles is completely lost with the flash...turns out looking copper in the photo, green in person.

I'm going to be optimistic, and hope that I've just got a male and a female carpintis (actually, it would be 7 males and a female...nice ratio!). I guess if its a carpintis and a cyanoguttatis, if they crossed it would be something like a Teal Texas?

Now THIS is a little weird: I just did a search on MSN using "carpintis female" as my search terms (I wanted to get a few more pics to look at, to help me make up my mind about these fish, especially since the female (?) is starting to take on breeding colors). The 2nd site listed turned out to be a search summary of my posts on Cichlid Forums. If I were trying to promote a website, I wouldn't be able to get it listed that high for months (if that). :nana3:
...perhaps the spiders like bananas...
carpinte for sure! i have had a heap of these guys and a couple escondido too. as for breeding colors... the pair will develop a 'beard shape' darker coloration that continues along the underbelly. more so on the underbelly of the male. both look like they grew purple chin strap facial hair over night.

Hehehe...the female has really been showing her breeding colors tonight: she looks like a vertical line has been drawn from her dorsal spot straight down. Everything anterior is very, very light. She's courting the entire tank, I think. I haven't seen any similar changes in color on any of the other fish, and none have figured out what her shaking is all about. She's been cleaning a piece of slate, no help there, either. From another old article that I was reading earlier, Loiselle thought that it would be difficult to even artificially induce hybridization between carpintis and cyanoguttatis...so hopefully the labels at the lfs were right, and I've got a tank full of a single species. I'll try to get some pics of the breeding dress (and why does the male have breeding dress, instead of, say, breeding smoking jacket?).
does he/she have a darkened underbelly and/or darkened underjaw (lower half of face) 'darkened' meaning purple/black with a PALE blue/green body (almost white).???? or its it just the line you describe from the body ocellaris down?

Everything from the imaginary line forward becomes very light, almost white. There is a little of the dark stripe forward to the chin, but it is only below the gill covers, so it isn't very noticeable. I'm running late this morning, but I'll try to get a pic posted tonight.

With the above post, it now comes up first when I do the same search. I'm assuming that this just means it's not a commonly used search term... Oh well...I'll take the exposure any way I can get it. :nana:

Not the best photo, and not at the peak of contrast, but this gives the general idea:

No problem here with seeing road signs, but in another year or 2, my doctor has promised that I'll need reading glasses. Another of those indications that I'm older than I realize.....sort of like when hot women that I meet call me "sir"... :stiff:
