Hi, I don't know much but thought I'd throw my 2 cents in. I had a pleco and a Synodontis Eupterus. Everything was okay till the African Malawi Mbuna began to breed. It only took 2 days and the pleco was dead. The Syno is still unharmed but I don't know the comparison of cleaning they do. Oh yeah, the sizes of your fish would be a big issue too.

I've never have a problem with Plecos and Cichlids. The only instances I've heard were with breeding fish and super aggresive fish that would kill everthing that entered the tank. You should probably be ok.

I've kept American cichlids with a pleco before with no problems. Just make sure the pleco is about the same size as the cichlids or bigger so they won't be a tempting snack.

I have always had pleco's with every fish I have kept. They seem to work with every thing. I have a 7 inch pleco in with mbuna right now. My brother has two plecos (small) in with a oscer right now.

Should be ok but keep an eye on them, I had a 4 inch male convict rip the eye out of a 6-7 inch pleco about a month ago. The pleco is fine though. Doesn't seem to worry him at all only having one eye.

I keep plecos with a super agressice Red Devil... every now and again one dies, but I've taught her killing them doesn't pay because I chase her with the net when she goes after one and rearange her tank (something she despises) when she kills one, so she learned to live and let live.

hey i have a 10'' plecostomus and a 5'' convict (female) and they do fine ,
the only time they even try to bite each other is when the pleco goes neer the convicts favorite rock and stares at him, but the convict learns about his spikes and usually doesnt mess wit' him any more

plecos go well with cichlids when they are sized right.. i had an 8 inch female dempsey with my 9 inch pleco and she picked on it nonstop ( wich she did to my 6 inch male dempsey aswell ) didnt kill it but chewed its fins pretty neer right off. since then i moved the big female to another tank to let my male grow up to her size. But the pleco has taken over ownership and when i fed them the pleco goes to the top and chases the dempsey away if he comes near. ( the dempsey swims away fast because he has been slapped by the plecos tail before.

The pleco will be fine i have always had them with my cichlids. Only on a few occassions they will have frayed fins but they grow back really quickly and it doesnt seem to bother it. Just to be sure get a large one so they wont be tempted

Okay, here's some much needed drama - are you all on crack?!?

He has a JD, an osacr, and a texas, all in a 55....and he's being encouraged to add a pleco in the tank.....where to begin?!? :D

Please do not add a pleco, especially not a common one. Try a bristlenose. Or even better, try a bulldog (they are a little smaller and might become food, but they are fast). A pleco adds to the biomass of the system the same as any other fish. So a large common pleco adds considerably more waste into the system.

AND, while you're at it, you have too many fish for your tank. The JD and texas are probably better suited for their aggression. The oscar would probably be okay with them in a larger tank (like 5'+), but you're going to have problems and I suspect the O won't fare well. And even forget the aggression - you have WAY too much bioload and not enough space for these big fish to have their own space once they grow (I'm thinking you have juvies now). Constant cramping and fighting will lead to chronic stress that will be exacerbated by the deteriorating water parameters as they grow and you are going to have sick fish. Period.

Misskittie - one adult O for a 55 MAX. A 55 is even small, as it's only as deep as an adult oscar is long.

Thank you and have a nice day!

(Jonah - didn't mean you :D )
