I have a 29 gallon tank which I know is pretty small. I have somewhere around 20 fish in it. My nitrates have been giving me problems, they are around 30-40ppm. I have plants in the tank and I do water changes frequently. Does anyone have any suggestions or anything that will help me out? What should the nitrate levels be?

Hi and welcome, CSoli921

Your nitrate levels are not high for a freshwater tank.

As Tom said that nitrate reading should be fine.

While nitrates are toxic to fish it takes much higher ammounts than that.

You need to keep an eye on your ammonia and nitrites as well, those are the killers.

My nitrates are also high. My has come from a recent spike in my water well. All of my fish in my three tanks are doing great. The only problem I have is combating brown algae. It comes and goes. You should be fine.

normally I'd say water changes would help but in your case alf I'd say not you could always get some free floating plans and a bucket if your tanks aren't too big.

Float the plants in the bucket for a few days and see if that helps reduce the nitrates
