Just try to clean a portion of the substrate each week with your water change. If you have HOB filters then they may need to be rinsed in tank water after a month or two. Don't rinse all your filter media at once. Do a different one each time to allow the bacteria to recolonize on it. Cleaning them all at once introduces the opportunity to remove all of your bacteria and your tank might cycle again.

I use a diatome filter that does a pretty good job. A godsend really cuts cleaning time in almost half. My new tanks I wait three weeks with a fish then do a pretty good clean. Then every other week or so after that. I have started this process sine a total loss of one of my tanks and I don't seem to have any problems. actually the opposite they are al thriving and breeding like rabbits (the fry I do much more often)
