I was moving him to his new tank and he blew up to the point of exploding. Sounded like a popped ballon There is a 1 inch hole in his skin. Treating with melafix and salt and he seems to be coming around. Comfortable at least. Amazing stuff.

Rudy,
If you can find any discomed up your way, I would use that. It works the very best on most puffer problems and will absolutely avert infection. If you can't get it, keep doing what you're doing. Good luck and please keep us posted on how he is doing. A split on top is somewhat rare. It usually happens on the bottom.

I had an African do that once, but she had a ruptured swim bladder from being captured at the store.

I added a mixture of tea tree oil, distilled water and salt to the water. (homemade melafix) The wound is probably a quarter of the size and my fahaka is doing great. Amazing.

He even ate a shrimp last night. Of course he lost most of it through a hole in his back, but it is a start.....just kidding about the last part.:D

My wife called me this afternoon and said he was dead. Got home he was lifeless. i have been doing water changes since 3:30pm today and he is now breathing steady. He went from laying on his side with a huge bulge to laying on his belly breathing hard. I will post how it goes.

Still a thread of hope then?

Ask me an hour ago I would have said not a chance. I picked him up and was going to put him out of his misery. Convulsing and lifeless not breathing. He is doing surprisingly well right now. I seriously can't beleive it. I would take a pic, but I am worried that would stress him out.

Don't give up hope yet. That little African I mentioned survived her ordeal although I was sure she was a goner. She was losing food out of the hole in her side, too. She was just laying on the bottom of the tank breathing hard, and it took enormous effort for her to swim up off the bottom for any reason. I kept thinking that if she was eating, there was hope. I was right.

I hope your puffer can be as tough and gut it out.

Rudy,
Fahaka's are about as tough as they get.
Good luck and keep us posted.

Good news. He made it threw the night. Looks almost happy to be alive. He is breathing steady and looks like he will make it. Amazing.

He survived. Not eating yet but I am sure he will in time. Yesterday he wasn't swimming so he is making progress.

God, that looks terrible rudy!
I'm going to give my fahaka a hug right now.
They are tough fish. I will continue to pray for him. I bet he'll make it.

Eating like a champ and full recovery. Took him a while, but I don't think he wanted to give up his new digs that easy.

Still has the weird hole though so I hope that heals.

His problem may be from the "home made" Melafix you are using. Don't be cheap--buy Melafix.

For an educated person this is a dumb statement. First of all this is an old thread so old that you shouldn't be chirping about it. Secondly the fish lived...Thirdly not every post about puffers deserves to be sermoned by you.
