i bought this fish from the pet store, it was in a tank with about 5 other jack dempseys about the same size, the other ones all looked pretty normal to me. This one looked a little odd, so i bought him. At first i just thought it was deformed, but i could be wrong. all these pics are of the same fish. my Question is this a deformed fish or is it a cross between something? thank you

I'd guess deformed, the rest of him looks very JDish. If it was a hybrid I'd expect to see variation in other areas since his face is so different. That's just a shot in the dark guess though.

I'd say it is a hybrid. JD with either Festae or Uro + something else.

I'm leaning towards deformity. It happens a lot, they just normally get culled before they get to the market so we don't see them unless we do a lot of breeding.
I restacked your pictures. The cookie cutter effect was killing me.
Nice shots by the way, especially the first and last ones.:ok:

Leaning towards? I fell right over. This is what happens when fry are not culled properly. I can't believe they sell fish like that.

=) well what should i do. should i let the fish grow? do you think it will have troubles in the future?
It will probably be fine. If it was weak it probably would have been culled by the siblings.
I would take it back though. Stores really shouldn't get away for selling fish like that.
Nothing against your fish though If you like him than there is nothing wrong with keeping him.

I agree, that head is certainly deformed, but it still looks like a hybrid to me as well. Just my opinion.
