I have two Red Zebras that are acting strangely.

She stays close to him, for the most part. If she is not swimming near him, she is hanging around just outside this area under the lace rock, where he has excavated a large cavern. He doesn't let anyone near this place, but her (that is when he is watching and not chasing every other tankmate). He freaked out earlier tonight when my johanii (sp?) went in there to check things out.

Even though I only have the pair, and he doesn't have a "harem" is it possible that they have bonded and might spawn?

What specific behaviors do these fish exhibit when they are ready to mate?
I know I will be able to see if she is carrying eggs, but what are the things that lead up to this? Also, are there special requirements for them to spawn? I have read that the temp., water changes, lighting, etc. all affect this, but I haven't changed a thing in the tank. So is spawning still possible?

I'm not ready to be a Piscene grandmother yet!!!!!

If ur red zebras are acting like that they r probably getting ready to mate. Signs to look for are the male digging out the cave and doing sort of a shaking dance around the female displaying his fins. Thats all ive seen in my tank but after i see that babies are around in a few weeks, hope its the same for u

 better get ready, granny! keep in mind that mouthbrooders do not bond--they get together, do the wild thing, then go their separate ways.

So SGypsy, do I get a grandmother's shower???

And what do I do with the babies, anyway? Seems cruel just to let them be eaten by the others?

 yes, you definitely get a shower!! :sygypsy:
it's not cruelty to let the babies get eaten--that's just life in the fish world.
