I have two Texas cichlids but the spots look so different. I just want to know what type/kind of Texas they are? They are both around 3/12 inches.
First one

first one is cyanoguttatum (smaller, blue spots usually) and the second one is carpintis (larger, green spots usually). :)

Jason,
Are you sure?
I would have said the opposite looking at the pics. I could be wrong, just guessing based on personal experience.

yeah, pretty sure. the color of the spots may vary based on age, mood and wether or not they're breeding, but the size of the spots are usually how to tell he difference. carpintis have larger spots whereas the cyanoguttatus have smaller spots. :)

Thanks guys.
yeah im sure the second is a h.carpinte, the original texas. their is also a c.econdido (green texas cichlid, which this is not.) which is smaller and has a different head shape and longer more slender body. see www.aquamojo.com -fish picures. as for pattern size ive heard of varients in areas and different river systems, but have never seen pics so i cant confirm about the other species mentioned or weather it is a varient. however with your writen consent i can pass it on to a friend jef rapps who many people believe to be the world formost cichlid expert and breeder! he will DEFINATELY know as he breeds nearly everything that ends up in stores accross america and asia- YES the fish you own are probebly his! he keeps many species he collects on his expeditions through the american jungles, (he currently breeds and sells the REAL rivulatus [green terror] which looks comletely different than those in stores, in fact not even close!) see www.tangledupincichlids.com for pictures and prices including shipping qoutes for the real gt and other rarities-i like his variety of rare uarus!!!

The management.
Agez, there are different variants of the Carpintis (pearl cichlid) and Cyanoguttatum (texas Cichlid) such as the Carpintis (escondido). There are also a ton of hybrids of the two different species and in a fish store it is difficult to find one that isn't. It is also sometimes hard to distinguish the difference between a hybrid, and pure bred. To do so and be sure you would have to get it from a reputable breeder such as Jeff Rapps. To give a 100% identity would be impossible, however what was given was a well educated guess.
I think many who own neotropical cichlids know, or have heard of tangled up in cichlids. If they don't they soon will. To say that these fish most likley came from Rapps is probably not certain as they are a pretty common fish to find in Florida fish farms.
